There is widespread tension in Kiphire and Shamator after the killing of a young couple in a shooting incident at Shamator, Tuensang district on February 6.
The news of the killing reverberated in Kiphire district as irate mobs went on the rampage in the district headquarter. According to the police in Kiphire, violence erupted around noon on Sunday after the bodies of the two victims reached the town. Mobs set fire to several vehicles on the road while destroying houses, the police informed.
A house belonging to MLA T. Torechu was also reported to be among the houses targeted by the mobs.
In Shamator, the situation was stated to be tense in certain pockets of the town, while Shamator village remained tense. Additional police forces has been stationed according to reports.
Sate Home Minister Y Patton and Parl. Secy. Tohanba has condemned the killing and asked police to nab the culprits at the earliest. (Inputs from News agencies)
