Nagaland’s porous borders a matter of concern in containing covid19

With neighboring states reporting COVID19 positive cases, the porous state border, especially the one with Assam has become a matter of concern for Nagaland Government.

Transportation of essential commodities has been exempted from the 21-day nationwide lockdown.

The principal secretary to the government of Nagaland, Health and Family Welfare (H&FW), Menukhol John, said that the inter-state borders are “an area of concern”. “We can’t help people coming in” for transportation of essential commodities, he added.

The medical team deployed at the border areas are working hard and trying its best, he added.

Health and Family Welfare minister, S Pangnyu Phom, who held a review meeting on COVID-19 Wednesday, has asked the department officials to give more focus on the areas bordering other states as the situation was very vulnerable at this stage.

Earlier, Principal Secretary of Home Abhijit Sinha told Eastern Mirror that the government understands the situation along inter-state border areas in Wokha district. After sealing the borders along the district, all vehicles carrying essential commodities are now plying from Dimapur via Kohima, he said, adding that the idea was to avoid going there (Assam) altogether for marketing.

As per The Telegraph Nagaland government sealed the border with Assam under Bhandari subdivision in Wokha district after five persons tested positive for Covid-19 at Merapani sector in Assam bordering Nagaland.
