The Centre has clarified that its current priority is to strengthen and expand existing higher education institutions under the National Education Policy (NEP), effectively ruling out the immediate establishment of an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Nagaland.
The response was given by Dr Sukanta Majumdar, Minister of State for Education and Development of North Eastern Region, following a Zero Hour mention by Nagaland MP S. Supongmeren Jamir on December 4, 2025. The MP had raised the long-pending demand for an IIT in the state, specifically highlighting the issue of land allotment for the proposed institute.
Government’s Stance: Strengthen, Not Expand
In his written response, Dr Majumdar stated that the government’s focus is on implementing the NEP’s vision of multidisciplinary and quality education. “The current priority is to strengthen and expand existing higher education institutions in alignment with the National Education Policy,” the Minister noted.
The government also pointed out that Nagaland already hosts key centrally funded institutions, including Nagaland University and the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Nagaland.
Significant Funding Already Allocated
The Ministry highlighted substantial financial support already extended to the state under two major schemes:
- Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA) : A total outlay of ₹1,292.16 crore has been approved for Nagaland for the period 2023–24 to 2025–26 to enhance access, equity, and excellence in higher education. As of March 25, 2026, a central share of ₹130.46 crore has been released to the state under this scheme.
- Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) : A total of 39 projects have been sanctioned for Nagaland with an allocation of ₹254.06 crore, including a central share of ₹229.57 crore.
Nagaland IIT Proposal “Under Consideration” – No Timeline
On the specific demand for an IIT for Nagaland, the Ministry confirmed that a request received on January 1, 2025, has been acknowledged and is “under consideration.” However, the government did not provide any specific timeline for its establishment.
Local Demand Remains Strong
The demand for an IIT in Nagaland has long been seen as crucial for boosting technical education, creating employment opportunities for the state’s youth, and accelerating long-term development. While the Centre’s response offers no immediate relief, local leaders and education advocates continue to press for the institute.
