Nagaland’s Unemployment problem Escalates As Thousands Apply For Few Govt. Jobs

Nagaland faces a significant unemployment challenge, marked by a high unemployment rate (around 16.07% in a recent 2025 survey). Government jobs are top priority for the youth but jobs on offer are few.

In January, more than 32,000 candidates have applied for 1,176 constable (general duty) positions in the Nagaland Police. The multi-day recruitment process, organized district-wise, will continue until January 16.

Lack of technical skills among the workforce, despite a high literacy rate is a worry. Key issues include insufficient job opportunities, a disconnect between education and market needs (with most lacking vocational training).

This ‘joblessness’ state of the youth is a worry and Nagaland need to find solutions to engage its young population productively.
