Liverpool forward Diogo Jota dies in car crash

Portuguese and Liverpool FC forward Diogo Jota, 28, tragically died today in a car crash in north‑western Spain, along with his brother, André Silva, aged 26.

The accident occurred around 00:30 a.m. on Spain’s A‑52 highway, province of Zamora (near Cernadilla/Palacios de Sanabria).

Their Lamborghini reportedly had a tyre blowout while overtaking, veered off the road and burst into flames; no other vehicles were involved.

Diogo’s legacy

Jota joined Liverpool in September 2020 from Wolves for around £45 million.

He made 182 appearances, scoring 65 goals and providing 22 assists across all competitions.

Jota contributed to Liverpool winning the 2024‑25 Premier League, plus FA Cup and EFL Cups.

He earned 49 caps for Portugal, helped them win two UEFA Nations League titles (2018‑19, 2024‑25).

Jota married Rute Cardoso on 22 June 2025, days before his death, and leaves behind three young children.

Tributes

Cristiano Ronaldo called the loss “doesn’t make any sense,” UEFA will hold a minute’s silence ahead of Portugal’s match.

Liverpool FC described the tragedy as an “unimaginable loss,” with club flags flying at half‑mast. They’ve asked for privacy for the family
