Assam boxer Lovlina one step away from Olympic medal

Lovlina Borgohain

Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain defeated Nadine Apetz of Germany in Preliminaries Round of 16 bout in women’s Welter (64-69kg) event and booked a place in the quarterfinal.

Lovlina Borgohain, the first woman boxer from Assam at the Olympics, came up with a commanding display over the experienced German at the Kokugikan Arena.

With the win by a split decision over the senior boxer, Lovlina moved into the quarter-final. She is now just a win away from sealing a medal for India. The semi-finalists are assured of at least a bronze in the sport at the Games.

Lovlina will face former world champion and 4th seed Chen Nien-Chin in the quarter-final of Women’s Welter on July 30. A win there will help her finish on the podium regardless of what happens in the semi-final.
