Manipur readies for crucial PM Modi visit

PM Narendra Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposed visit to Manipur is significant both politically and socially, given the backdrop of the state’s recent turmoil. This would be his first visit to Manipur since ethnic violence erupted in May 2023. The prime minister’s presence is seen as an effort to reassure people of the Centre’s commitment to peace.

In a significant move, the Kuki-Zo Council has agreed to lift the blockade on National Highway-2 (NH-2). The announcement is a result of aseries of high-level meetings between representatives of the Govt. of India and the Kuki-Zo Council, aimed at addressing the prolonged disruptions caused by the highway blockade.

State officials suggest the visit may take place around September 13 or 14, though final confirmation is still pending. Manipur Chief Secretary previously noted that no official confirmation of any visit had been received yet.

Manipur has effectively been turned into a “fortress”, with heightened security in sensitive districts. In Churachandpur, the district administration has banned drones, UAVs, balloons, and other aerial devices around the Peace Ground venue.

Manipur lies at the heart of India’s Act East Policy, acting as a gateway to Southeast Asia. Stability here is crucial for connectivity projects and cross-border trade.
