5 Questions with Sheyetoli Awomi | Amira school of math

Sheyetoli Awomi is the Founder of Amira School of Math, which was inaugurated on 2nd October 2023, with the aim of revolutionizing the way we approach mathematics education.

  • Tell us about your family and education background.
I come from a humble and supportive Naga family. My upbringing played a big role in shaping who I am today. Academically, I’ve always been inclined towards subjects that required logic and reasoning, especially mathematics and science. I pursued my education with the intent to one day make a difference in my community, particularly in how we approach learning. My journey as an educator has been deeply influenced by both my personal experiences and the environment I grew up in, where I saw many students struggling with math.
  • What motivated you to start a tuition centre focused on teaching math?
Growing up, I noticed that many students around me feared math. It was often treated as a subject only for the ‘smart ones’ and many gave up too early. This deeply troubled me. I wanted to change that narrative. That’s why I started Amira School of Math — to help students see math not as a source of fear but as a tool for problem-solving, decision-making, and creativity. My goal has always been to eradicate the fear of math and make it fun, accessible, and relatable.
  • Is math ‘difficult’ like how most people perceive it to be?
Math is not difficult — it’s misunderstood. The fear often stems from how it’s taught rather than the subject itself. When students don’t relate math to real-life situations or when they’re made to memorise without understanding, it becomes intimidating. But once they start seeing the patterns, the logic, and how it connects to everyday life, it becomes just another subject — and often, a fascinating one.
  • What methodologies do you use in your institution to teach math?
At Amira, we believe in ‘math beyond the classroom’. We use interactive methods, real-world applications, and a lot of storytelling to teach concepts. We encourage inquiry, critical thinking, and peer discussions. Every child learns differently, so we also personalise support when needed. Most importantly, we create a safe space where making mistakes is part of learning, not something to be ashamed of.
  • What is the way forward for your institution?
We’re building a community of problem solvers. Our dream is to produce the next generation of Naga mathematicians and educators who will carry the mission forward. We aim to expand our outreach, host math marathons , webinars, and mentoring sessions. Ultimately, we want Amira to become a movement — one that changes how math is taught, learned, and perceived in our state.
