“Regional strategy” behind NDPP–NPF merger

Seasoned politician, regional political stalwart and Nagaland chief minister Dr Neiphiu Rio is not done yet. He is devising a merger which can alter the political landscape of Naga dominated areas in the near future. Political analysts see this not merely as a state-level realignment but a strategic move by Rio. The merger could expand reach into Manipur—where Naga People’s Front (NPF) has MLAs—and potentially influence politics across the Northeast, reports the Morung Express.

Manipur

NPF has an established presence with MLAs in the Manipur Legislative Assembly. If merged, Rio’s leadership could extend influence into Manipur’s Naga-dominated hill districts. If the NDPP–NPF merger leads to a stronger NPF presence in Manipur, it could shift coalition dynamics, potentially reducing BJP’s reliance on other regional partners or giving the new party more influence in negotiations.

Arunachal Pradesh

Meanwhile, in Arunachal Pradesh, though not electorally dominant, a stronger Naga-centric regional force could shape discourse in border districts with sizable Naga populations.

Boost to home politics

In Nagaland, a merger would give Neiphiu Rio a unified regional party with 34 MLAs (NDPP 32 + NPF 2) in the 60-member Assembly. This reduces fragmentation of Naga regional politics and strengthens Rio’s negotiating power with national parties (especially BJP). Retaining the NPF’s traditional symbol could help reconnect with voters who have historic loyalty to NPF.

Dynamics with BJP

Both he Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP)  and NPF have partnered with BJP in the past. A merger consolidates them into a single bargaining unit, giving Rio more weight in seat-sharing talks and ministerial allocations. For BJP, this reduces the risk of managing two rival Naga allies; but it also increases Rio’s leverage.

Naga peace process

A united NDPP–NPF could project itself as the sole political voice of the Nagas, strengthening its role in pushing the Naga peace process with the Government of India.

Countering Congress

Congress has been slowly trying to revive in Nagaland and Manipur. A strong NDPP–NPF bloc may pre-empt Congress gains.

Win-win situation

The merger isn’t just about Nagaland; it’s about creating a pan-Naga political front under Rio’s leadership. All in all, the merger looks like a win-win situation for both parties and it will take shape in all probability.
