Assam could “automatically be included in Bangladesh”, Himanta Biswa Sarma warns

Assam chief minister Himanta Biwsa Sarma has again sounded a warning concerning the rise of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.

“In Assam, 40 per cent of the population are Bangladeshi-origin people. If it increases 10 per cent more, we will automatically be included,” the Assam CM recently remarked.

He said Assam is closely monitoring developments in Bangladesh amid unrest, citing concerns over violence against minorities and potential regional effects.

The Chief Minister claimed that the population share of Hindus and Muslims in Assam would become equal by the 2027 census, adding that the demographic shift has made governance in the northeastern state increasingly difficult.

Assam shares one of the longest and most porous stretches of India’s 4,096-km border with Bangladesh, making it highly vulnerable to cross-border spillover.
