Mother Teresa’s charity bank account frozen, FCRA renewal rejected?

Missionaries of Charity helping the poor during the pandemic

The Union home ministry on Monday said that the FCRA renewal application of Missionaries of Charity (MoC) founded by Mother Teresa was refused on December 25 for not meeting certain eligibility conditions.

FCRA or Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010 provides for a legal mechanism to deal with violation of its provisions by NGOs.

The ministry said that some “adverse inputs” were noticed due to which MoC’s application was not renewed further.

The MHA said it did not receive any revision application from the MoC requesting review of its decision.

However, the ministry clarified that government has not frozen the bank accounts of MoC, adding that the organization itself sent a request to State Bank of India to suspend its accounts.

Earlier, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee had expressed shock over the move to freeze the accounts of the charity which was established by Mother Teresa in 1950.

“Shocked to hear that on Christmas, Union Ministry FROZE ALL BANK ACCOUNTS of Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity in India! Their 22,000 patients & employees have been left without food & medicines,” she tweeted.
“While the law is paramount, humanitarian efforts must not be compromised,” Banerjee added.
