KOHIMA: The Nagaland Home Department has reiterated the statewide ban on single-use plastics and directed all deputy commissioners to ensure strict enforcement through village authorities. The order follows a Supreme Court directive and references earlier state notifications from 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2022.
Banned items include:
- Plastic carry bags of any thickness or size
- Plastic plates, cups, forks, spoons and straws
- Styrofoam (thermocol) decorative materials
- Plastic flags, balloon sticks, candy sticks and ice-cream sticks
- PVC banners below 100 microns
- Certain plastic wrapping and packaging materials
- Small packaged drinking-water bottles in many government-related functions and events
In Noklak, the district administration has announced a stricter local ban effective from 5 June 2026. Violators may face:
- ₹10,000 fine for the first offence
- ₹20,000 fine for the second offence
- Cancellation of trade licence for repeated offences
Enforcement teams have been tasked with conducting regular inspections.
The administration is encouraging alternatives such as cloth bags, jute bags and reusable water containers to reduce plastic waste.
Nagaland has had plastic-ban notifications for several years, but the latest orders suggest a stronger enforcement phase rather than just new rules.
