Nagaland likely to remain with One seat during Lok Sabha Expansion to 850 Seats

New Parliament Building, New Delhi

Nagaland will likely still have One Lok Sabha seat—even if the total seats increases in Lok Sabha to 850. Currently, Nagaland has only One Lok Sabha constituency. The proposed increase to 850 seats is not finalized allocation—it’s just an overall expansion plan.

The number of seats per state depends on Population (main factor), Geography & administrative balance and Political considerations (especially for small states) Delimitation in India is what will decide the final distribution.

Likely scenario is that Nagaland remains One seat- Reason being Very small population compared to other states and Many small NE states are protected from losing representation balance.

On the other hand, in an unlikely scenario. Nagaland gets two seats only if a minimum-seat guarantee is revised and there is a policy push to increase representation of smaller states.

Even if Lok Sabha goes from 543 to 850 seats, Large states (UP, Bihar, etc.) will gain most of the extra seats and Small states like Nagaland may see little or no change.

An increase to two seats in Nagaland cannot be fully ruled out until delimitation is completed.
